6 reasons to visit Mexico City (Come see me!)

It's Cinco de Mayo!* So i figured this is a good opportunity to convince you that you need to visit Mexico City. I've come up with at least 6 reasons you should visit the capital of this amazing country. Most people think of Mexico and conjure images of unlimited margaritas, beach life and night long partying - Cancun, Cozumel, Acapulco, Cabo. Thats all fun, but there is so much more to Mexico than tequila and tacos! You need to visit the capital to find out more. So let's get into it.

1. I live here So much history!
Founded by the Aztecs in 1325, Tenochtitlan aka Mexico City was, at its peak,  the largest Pre-Colombian city in the Americas. And the Aztecs were cool AF. You know that cool calendar thats supposed to predict the end of the world? Yeah, that one. That's from Mexico, and this city was their capital. And they left more than the calendar behind. Actually they never left. You can visit many historical sites around the city including the ruins downtown, especially Templo Mayor, as the modern city was built right on top of the Aztec one, and the Mesoamerican city of Teotihuacan, with its awesome pyramids. I mean, you can even take a river cruise in Xochimilco! Very, very. cool.

2. Museums...museums everywhere.

My friend Marco, in front of the National Museum
in the Zocalo
There are over 150 museums in Mexico City, that cover every thing from Pre-colmbian art, to War and History: Bellas Artes, National Museum of Anthropology, Soumaya, are just a few, Come see for yourself. Art and culture in Mexico is so much more than Frida Kahlo and Dia de los Muertos!

3. Foodie Paradise

You think you know Mexican food, but I'm here to tell you . you don't. What you're probably familiar with is Tex-Mex. Good, but not the same thing. Yo no quiero Taco Bell. And you won't either after you've eaten here. I don;t even know where to begin - tacos, carnitas, sopes, chilaquiles, pozole, chiles en nogada. you can basically spend your entire vacation eating and NOT be disappointed. Just don't drink the tap water.

4. Markets- the best of Markets.

I've been to quite a few markets around this planet, and I have to say, this city has some of the best I've seen. Some are specialist markets, like Mercado de Artesanias in Coyoacan , And El Bazar Sabado (Mercado San Angel) on Saturdays, with the best of hand crafted goods - ranging from leather goods, to one-off jewellery and ornate furniture. Others are a foodie's paradise. I'm a bit partial to La Ciudadela - it's easy to get to, has lots of stalls, it's clean and the vendors don;t pressure you. There are also quite a few pop up flea markets, or tiyanges where you can fill up on tlacoyos  and horchata, and shop till you drop. I really like the one in La Condesa on Calle Ometusco. The tlacoyos are a mouth party.

5. Night life is LIT.

I don't know where to begin. No matter what your scene is, you're bound to find something here. So many bars, clubs, and spots to get down and dirty in. I'm partial to Pata Negra - drinks are a bit pricey but there's def a good vibe and the music is good. There's even space to sit when your feet get tired.  I'd recommend starting your night out in good old Zona Rosa - if nothing else, it's a good time. Pick a bar. It'll be fun, i promise. If you're an alcohol snob, check out a Mezcaleria. Mezcal>teqiila. This is a fact. I like this one, as it's near where I work. HA! Plan to stay out all night. No one goes home early here, and we chase tequila with beer!

6. CHEAP TICKETS!

Plane tickets to Mexico City are usually quite reasonable: $180 from MIA, 308 from LAX , $198 from DFW, $435 from JFK and between $600-700 from the Caribbean, (POS, BGI, KIN) with transit in MIA.Who doesn't love cheap tickets!

7. BONUS!

I live here! Hit me up and I'll show you around. We shall eat, drink, and be merry. Ven a CDMX (Ciudad de Mexico)! And follow me on Instagram for more of Mexico City!

* Contrary to popular belief, Cinco de Mayo is NOT Mexican Independence Day. That's reserved for September 16 and  is a MUCH BIGGER celebration in Mexico. Cinco de Mayo marks the Victory over the Battle of Puebla. For some reason it's a big deal in the US but it's not even a national Holiday here. All the same, we wont pass up a reason to celebrate or drink tequila.
