the make up bag: diy carnival make up

how much did that make up artist quote you! really now. well unless I am the MUA you're paying, i simply cannot condone that.
For those of you not in the know, we are presently in the middle of the carnival season. it is the most exciting time of the year for any red-blooded trinidadian. at the climax of the season, carnival monday and tuesday, the populace dresses themselves in the finest costumes and adorn their bodies with ornate jewellery. elaborate make up is a major part of pulling the entire costume together..and of course, it can get expensive.

so that's where i come in. a friend of mine requested a carnival look that she would be able to do herself. she is a make up beginner.. let me rephrase.. she is in make-up kindergarten.. so this look isn't elaborate but it is one that will enhance her overall look. and most of all, its doable.

once again please accept my apologies for the picture quality. the camera gods are not loving me thse days. im workin on it.. so here we go*

 step 1 
After applying foundation evenly, and setting it with powder, prime the eyelids with an eyeshadow primer. (i cheated a bit here and  then added a purple cream eyeshadow to help the eyeshadow pigments pop a bit more but this step is optional.) add a gold eyeshadow to the inner corners of the eyelid.  (i used mary-quant eyeshadow in FY 04 but this brand is most likely unavailable outsdide of japan or the UK. any gold with a yellow undertone would work.)

fill in eyebrows and set with concealer. prime lids and apply gold shadow

 to inner corner with an applicator brush.

 step 2 

to the centre and outer lid, with a shader brush, apply a purple eyeshadow. (maryquant again..but  MAC purple haze is a dead match). apply the purple to lid but don't go past the crease. for the crease colour i wanted a burgundy/deep pink. i didnt actually have that colour so i mixed a sephora brick-red with a magenta shadow. you can do the same or try MAC early bird. using a blending brush and with a sweeping hand motion, apply the shadow to the outer corners and crease and blend, avoiding the brow-line. next, apply a highlight to the brow bone and again, blend. i used MAC retrospeck.

with an applicator brush, apply purple pigment to the centre and outer lids
with a blending brush, apply the burgundy to outer corners and  crease

 step 3 

line the lower lash line with an aqua liner, and set with an eye shadow in the same colour family to set it. (i used MAC aquadisiac.) then line the water-line with a black pencil liner. now to finish the eyes: line the upper lid with a black liquid line and wing it out. next, add 2 coats of mascara to both top and bottom lids. 

  tip: look down into the mirror to apply mascara. this way you avoid getting it all over your lids.

 the finish 

to complete the look. first, clean up under the eyes with concealer. the concealer will also act as a highlighter and brighten the look. add bronzer to the cheekbones and t-zone to bring some definition to the face. you want to glowwwwww. as its a carnival look, a bright pink blush is the perfect pop of colour for cheeks.  lightly dust a finishing/setting powder over the face or set with a make up - fixative like MAC Fix+. add a pink lip gloss and that's it.. you just saved yourself a LOT of money. have fun and be safe out on the roads!

the final look. dont forget to set your make up as you want it to last all day.

 side note:  to make this look even more carnival-esque, you can add false lashes and studs around the lid. i would have but i didn't want to depress myself more by getting to into it. (homesick trini) walk with blotting sheets to absorb sweat and moisture without ruining your make up, and remember stay hydrated.
